Duvet vs comforter: what you wash, what you buy and how it fits

A duvet is a filled insert that lives inside a removable cover. A comforter is a filled blanket with the cover built in, so it goes on the bed as it is. Sleep Foundation says duvets typically have the highest loft and give the most warmth, and that you can wash the cover often and the insert once or twice a year. Stores blur the line: Brooklinen sells insert-style bedding as a "comforter", and Parachute sells the same thing as a "duvet insert". For a Queen, Parachute's 90 × 94 in insert hangs 15 in over each side of a 60 in mattress.

What we found

One product, sold under both names

Brooklinen files its Down Alternative Comforters under "Duvet Inserts & Pillows". The page says the comforters have "extra loops & ties to keep it in place all night", and it answers "Do I need a duvet cover?" with two parts: no, not with its One Fluff and Done comforters, and yes, a cover is recommended for the others, to protect against oils and dirt. Parachute sells a down duvet insert with corner loops that line up with the interior ties in its covers. So the word on the label tells you little. Check three things on the listing: whether it has corner loops, whether the maker recommends a cover, and the size in inches.

Duvet vs comforter: construction, cover, warmth and washing
QuestionDuvet (insert and cover)Comforter
What is it?A fabric pocket of fill, used with a separate cover fastened at the corners with strings or buttons. Two layers of fabric sewn together over fill, with the cover built in.
Does it need a cover?Yes, it is designed for one.No. Brooklinen still recommends a cover for most of its comforters, to keep oils and dirt off the fill.
Which is warmer?Typically the one with the highest loft and the most warmth.Usually less loft. Brooklinen sells its comforters in lightweight, all-season and heavyweight fills, so check the fill weight on the listing.
How do you wash it?Wash the cover often. The insert needs washing once or twice a year if the cover is washed regularly. Parachute says to dry clean its down insert or machine wash it cold on a delicate cycle.Often too bulky for a home washer. Brooklinen says its down alternative comforters are machine washable at home and its down ones are best washed in a large commercial machine.
What holds it in place?Corner loops on the insert tie to interior ties in the cover (Parachute).Nothing, unless it has loops and you put it inside a cover (Brooklinen).

Our arithmetic

How far each size hangs over your mattress

Both makers sell one insert size for each pair of beds, so the drop over the sides changes with the bed. The drop is the insert width minus the mattress width, split across both sides. A Twin/Twin XL insert from Parachute is 60 in wide, so it hangs only 10.5 in over a 39 in Twin.

Mattress widths: Target's chart, checked 24 September 2026 (Sleep Foundation prints 38 in for Twin and Twin XL, which adds half an inch to those drops). Insert, cover and comforter sizes are width × length as Parachute and Brooklinen print them, read 15 October 2026. The drop is our arithmetic. A side is covered only if the drop is at least the mattress depth; our fitted sheet pocket depth page lists published mattress depths.

Brooklinen's advice on matching: if you already own a cover, match the size exactly; for a fuller, draped look, size up, for example a King comforter on a Queen bed gives extra coverage on the sides. The exact comforter and duvet ranges for every US and UK size are on sheet and duvet sizes.

Common questions

Is a duvet warmer than a comforter?

Sleep Foundation says duvets typically have the highest loft and the most warmth, and comforters tend to have less loft. Warmth also depends on fill weight: Parachute sells its Full/Queen down insert at 28, 35 and 45 oz.

Can I use a duvet without a cover?

Sleep Foundation says a duvet is designed to be used with a separate cover. Brooklinen recommends a cover to protect against oils and dirt and to extend the time between washes.

Can I put a comforter inside a duvet cover?

Yes, if it has loops. Brooklinen recommends a cover for most of its comforters, tells you to look for corner and side loops on the insert, and says to match the size of a cover you own exactly.

Which is easier to wash?

The duvet, because the cover is the part you wash often. Sleep Foundation says comforters are often too bulky for a conventional home washer and dryer.
