UK bed sizes
UK mattresses run from a Small Single (75 × 190 cm) to an Emperor (200 × 200 cm). The National Bed Federation lists six standard sizes: Small Single (75 × 190 cm), Single (90 × 190 cm), Small Double (120 × 190 cm), Double (135 × 190 cm), King (150 × 200 cm) and Super King (180 × 200 cm). It also gives each size in feet and inches, and the metric figures are rounded equivalents rather than exact conversions.

Metric and imperial sizes: Which? UK mattress size guide and, for the six standard sizes, the National Bed Federation buyer's guide, both checked 2026-09-24. The last column is our exact conversion (1 in = 2.54 cm) and its difference from the metric label.
What we found
Metric labels are not exact conversions
Converted exactly, a Double designed as 4ft 6in × 6ft 3in is 137.2 × 190.5 cm, not 135 × 190 cm. A King, 5ft × 6ft 6in, is 152.4 × 198.1 cm: 2.4 cm wider than its label but 1.9 cm shorter. The National Bed Federation, the UK bed makers' trade body, makes a related point in its guide: bed sizes "are not standardised and even if they have the same name (e.g. King size) they may not be the same". Two products with the same size name can differ by a couple of centimetres, so buy the mattress and frame together or compare the exact figures on both product pages.

Common questions
Is a Queen bigger than a King in the UK?
No. Which? uses "queen-size" for the Small Double, 120 × 190 cm, which is 30 cm narrower and 10 cm shorter than a UK King at 150 × 200 cm. A US Queen (152.4 × 203.2 cm) is a different, larger bed; see UK vs US bed sizes.
Is there a bigger bed than a Super King?
Yes. Which? lists the Emperor at 200 × 200 cm (6ft 6in × 6ft 6in), 20 cm wider than a Super King at the same length.
What are the Euro sizes sold in the UK?
Which? lists three: Euro Single 90 × 200 cm, Euro Double 140 × 200 cm and Euro King 160 × 200 cm. The Euro Single is 10 cm longer than a Single, the Euro Double 5 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a Double, and the Euro King 10 cm wider than a King. France uses the same three sizes (see French bed sizes).
How much bigger is the frame than the mattress?
It depends on the frame. IKEA's UK MALM frame for a 135 × 190 cm Double takes up 150 × 199 cm of floor space. See bed frame dimensions for more published frame footprints.
