Metric size and imperial name: Which? and the NBF buyer's guide, checked 2026-09-24; IKEA UK read on 2026-09-25. In feet and inches, 90 × 190 cm is 2 ft 11⅜ in × 6 ft 2¾ in. The surface is 1.71 m² (18.4 sq ft).

Room size for a Single bed

Approved Document M asks for a 750 mm clear zone on one side of a single bed, and shows a 900 × 1900 mm single bed in its furniture schedule, exactly this size.

Which? gives a similar consumer figure: at least 2ft 6in (76 cm) at the sides and foot. We work out each room size by adding 750 mm to the bed width for each open side and 750 mm to its length where the row has a zone at the foot; the Which? row uses 76 cm instead.

For comparison, the government's nationally described space standard sets the smallest single bedroom in a new home at 7.5 m², at least 2.15 m wide. The Single and its walkway zone account for 3.14 m² of that, leaving about 4.4 m² in area terms; whether a wardrobe, drawers and the door swing fit depends on the room's shape.

Who a Single fits

• Length. The National Bed Federation says a bed should be 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) longer than the tallest person in it. At 190 cm (6 ft 2¾ in), that puts the tallest comfortable sleeper at about 175 to 180 cm (5 ft 9 in to 5 ft 11 in).
• Width. A one-person size: the sleeper gets the full 90 cm. Two people sharing would get 45 cm each.

Which? calls it "the right size for a single adult" unless you are "a lot taller or broader than average". For taller sleepers, the Euro Single's extra 10 cm raises the tallest comfortable sleeper, by the NBF rule, to about 185 to 190 cm.

Sheets and duvet for a Single

Small Single size: 75 × 190 cm

A Small Single, also called a narrow single, is 75 × 190 cm, sold as a 2ft 6in × 6ft 3in bed (that imperial name converts to 76.2 × 190.5 cm). It is 15 cm narrower than a Single at the same length. Which? suggests it for a child's room, a box room or a study. Note that IKEA UK's Small Single is 80 × 200 cm.

The Single in other countries

France sells the same 90 × 190 cm size, as well as the 90 × 200 cm Euro Single. The US Twin is the nearest US size; see Twin bed dimensions.

Neither Which? nor the NBF lists one. The only longer single both list is the Euro Single, 90 × 200 cm. The next width up is the Small Double, 120 × 190 cm.
