Twin XL dimensions: 80 in long, 38 or 39 in wide, 36 in in some dorms

Twin XL dimensions: 80 in long (203.2 cm, 6 ft 8 in) and, depending on the source, 38 or 39 in wide (96.5 or 99.1 cm). Target prints 39 × 80 in; Sleep Foundation, Casper, Bed in a Box and Tampa Mattress print 38 × 80 in. College housing prints a third width: Duke and UCLA list their Twin XL mattresses at 36 × 80 in. A Twin XL is 5 in longer than a 75 in Twin and no wider.

What we found

A dorm Twin XL can be 2 to 3 inches narrower than the one in the shop

Duke's housing page says most of its mattresses are extra-long twin, "approximately 80 inches long x 36 inches wide x 7 inches deep", and tells residents in those halls to bring extra-long twin sheets. UCLA's undergraduate apartments give the same 36 × 80 in. Retail charts put the width at 38 or 39 in. North Dakota State goes further: its Residence Life office recommends extra-long twin sheets for every hall because that size fits any mattress on campus. Check your school's housing page for the mattress size before you buy a topper or a protector cut to a retail Twin XL.

Room size for a Twin XL bed

With a 30 in walkway on the open side and at the foot, a Twin XL against one wall needs floor space of about 5 ft 9 in × 9 ft 2 in; with walkways on both sides, 8 ft 3 in × 9 ft 2 in.

Walkway: Which? says to aim for at least 2ft 6in (76 cm) between the sides and foot of the bed and the nearest wall or furniture; the 2010 ADA Standards (305.3 and 806.2.3) require a clear floor space 30 in wide on both sides of a bed in accessible hotel rooms. Both were read on 2026-09-25. We work out each room size by adding 30 in to the bed width for each open side and 30 in to its length at the foot. The headboard wall needs no walkway. Allow extra space for bedside tables, door swings and a wardrobe.

Who a Twin XL fits

A Twin XL gives a taller sleeper 5 in more length than a Twin without making the bed any wider. For the 5 in difference drawn to scale, see Twin vs Twin XL.

Comforter range: Sleep Foundation, read 2026-09-25. A Twin fitted sheet is cut for a 75 in mattress, so it is 5 in short for an 80 in one. Duke says to bring extra-long twin sheets for its 36 × 80 in mattresses.

Common questions

What size are dorm beds?

It depends on the school and the hall. Duke says most of its mattresses are Twin XL at 36 × 80 in, two halls have a regular twin and three have 54 × 75 in mattresses. NDSU says every hall except two has an 80 in long twin. Ask housing for the exact mattress size.

What sheets fit a dorm Twin XL?

Duke tells residents of its 36 × 80 in halls to bring "extra-long" twin sheets. NDSU recommends extra-long twin sheets in every hall, because that size fits any mattress on campus and survives a move to another hall.

Do two Twin XLs make a King?

Two 38 in Twin XLs make 76 × 80 in, the same as a King. Two 39 in ones make 78 in, 2 in wider; two 36 in dorm mattresses make 72 in. See King size bed dimensions.

Will a Twin XL mattress fit a Twin frame?

A frame made for a 75 in mattress is 5 in too short for an 80 in one. Check the frame maker's stated mattress length; bed frame dimensions shows how makers publish it.
