Full size bed dimensions
A Full mattress, also called a Double in the US, is 54 × 75 in on Target's chart: 137.2 × 190.5 cm, or 4 ft 6 in × 6 ft 3 in. One Sleep Foundation guide gives it as 54 × 74 in, so we show both. It is 15 or 16 inches wider than a Twin of the same length, depending on the source, and 6 inches narrower and 5 inches shorter than a Queen. Shared by two, it gives each person 27 inches.
What we found
Four published lengths for one size
Most references we checked give a width of 54 in (IKEA states a 53⅛ in mattress for its Full frames); the length varies more. These are the Full lengths we found, each on its own page:
- 75 in: Target's chart and Sleep Foundation's double-bed guide.
- 74 in: the chart in Sleep Foundation's twin guide.
- 74½ in: Tuft & Needle's Original Mattress II, sold as a Full (54 × 74½ in).
- 74⅜ in: the length of the 53⅛ × 74⅜ in mattress IKEA states for its MALM and TARVA Full frames.
A frame made for 53⅛ × 74⅜ in and a mattress labelled 54 × 75 in differ by ⅞ in of width and ⅝ in of length. The size name alone does not settle it; compare the frame's stated mattress size with the mattress's product size.

Room size for a Full bed
With a 30-inch walkway on both sides and at the foot, a Full mattress needs floor space of 9 ft 6 in × 8 ft 9 in. Pushed against a wall on one side, it needs 7 ft × 8 ft 9 in.

Walkway: Which? says to aim for at least 2ft 6in (76 cm) between the sides and foot of the bed and the nearest wall or furniture; the 2010 ADA Standards (305.3 and 806.2.3) require a clear floor space 30 in wide on both sides of a bed in accessible hotel rooms. Both were read on 2026-09-25. We work out each room size by adding 30 in to the bed width for each open side and 30 in to its length at the foot. The headboard wall needs no walkway. Allow extra space for bedside tables, door swings and a wardrobe.
Who a Full fits
- Length. The National Bed Federation says a bed should be 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) longer than the tallest person in it. At 190.5 cm (6 ft 3 in), that puts the tallest comfortable sleeper at about 176 to 181 cm (5 ft 9 in to 5 ft 11 in). On Sleep Foundation's 74 in figure, that becomes 173 to 178 cm (5 ft 8 in to 5 ft 10 in).
- Width for two. Split down the middle, each of two sleepers gets 27 in (68.6 cm).
Twenty-seven inches each is 11 or 12 inches less than the 38 or 39 inches a Twin gives one person. One sleeper gets the whole 54 in; for two, a Queen adds 3 inches per person. At 75 in long, it is also 5 inches shorter than a Queen, which matters for anyone taller than about 5 ft 11 in by the NBF rule above.

A US Full and a UK Double differ slightly
Both are called "double", and a UK Double has the imperial size 4ft 6in × 6ft 3in, equivalent to 54 × 75 in. But it is sold as 135 × 190 cm, which is 2.2 cm narrower and 0.5 cm shorter than a Full. Which? lists the UK Double fitted sheet at 135 × 190 cm; see UK Double bed size.

Common questions
Is a Full bed the same as a Double?
In the US, yes: Sleep Foundation writes "full/double" for 54 × 75 in. In the UK, a Double is 135 × 190 cm.
How big is a Full bed in feet and metres?
4 ft 6 in × 6 ft 3 in, or 1.372 × 1.905 m (Target's figure).
How thick is a Full mattress?
The size name sets only width and length. Depth is the maker's choice: Tuft & Needle's Full is 12 in deep. Check it before buying fitted sheets.
Is a Full big enough for two adults?
Each gets 27 inches, less than a Twin's width. Whether that is enough depends on the two sleepers.
