Queen bed dimensions
A US Queen mattress is 60 × 80 in: 152.4 × 203.2 cm, or 5 ft × 6 ft 8 in (1.524 × 2.032 m). Target and Sleep Foundation publish the same figure. It is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a Full, and 16 inches narrower than a King of the same length. With a 30-inch walkway on both sides and at the foot, the mattress and its walkways need floor space of at least 10 ft × 9 ft 2 in.

All six Queen mattresses we checked are half an inch shorter than 80 in
We checked the published size of six Queen mattresses on their makers' pages. Not one is the full 80 inches long: all six list 79½ in, and five of them are 59⅞ in wide rather than 60. IKEA's own Queen frames say they take a 59⅞ × 79½ in mattress. For these six, 60 × 80 in is the size name, not the measurement. If the fit is tight, compare the maker's stated size, not the name.

Room size for a Queen bed
Sleep Number and Leesa suggest 10 × 10 ft (Leesa's ideal is 12 × 12 ft), without citing a source. Here the room is calculated from a published walkway width, for the mattress alone and for an IKEA frame with a published outer size.

Walkway: Which? says to aim for at least 2ft 6in (76 cm) between the sides and foot of the bed and the nearest wall or furniture; the 2010 ADA Standards (305.3 and 806.2.3) require a clear floor space 30 in wide on both sides of a bed in accessible hotel rooms. Both were read on 2026-09-25. We work out each room size by adding 30 in to the bed width for each open side and 30 in to its length at the foot. The headboard wall needs no walkway. Allow extra space for bedside tables, door swings and a wardrobe.
Who a Queen fits
- Length. The National Bed Federation says a bed should be 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) longer than the tallest person in it. At 203.2 cm (6 ft 8 in), that puts the tallest comfortable sleeper at about 188 to 193 cm (6 ft 2 in to 6 ft 4 in).
- Width for two. Split down the middle, each of two sleepers gets 30 in (76.2 cm).
Thirty inches each is 8 or 9 inches less than the 38 or 39 inches a Twin gives one person, depending on the source. For two people who each want a Twin's width, the size to look at is a King. For one sleeper, a Queen gives 21 or 22 inches more width than a Twin.

"Queen" in other countries
The name means different sizes in different countries. Which? uses "queen-size" for the UK Small Double, 120 × 190 cm, which is 32.4 cm narrower and 13.2 cm shorter than a US Queen. IKEA France calls 160 × 200 cm "queen size". By measurement, the closest UK bed is the King:

Common questions
How big is a Queen bed in feet?
5 ft wide and 6 ft 8 in long (60 × 80 in). Its length is 6 ft 8 in, not 6.5 ft, which would be 78 in.
What is a Queen bed in metres and millimetres?
1.524 × 2.032 m, or 1524 × 2032 mm. None of the UK or French sizes in our sources matches it exactly; the nearest ones are in the table above.
What is a short Queen?
An RV size: 60 × 74 or 60 × 75 in, the Queen's width but 5 or 6 inches shorter. See RV mattress sizes.
Does a Queen fit in a 10 × 10 ft room?
With the headboard on one 10 ft wall, a 60 in Queen leaves 30 in on each side, exactly the walkway above, and 40 in at the foot. On the MALM frame (66⅛ × 83⅛ in) the sides drop to about 27 in.
